Why the Caged Bird Sings

Description

A Kea at the Trevor Zoo. Keas are among the most intelligent of all birds, certainly comparable to the higher primates. They are native to New Zealand and are thus among some of the few species of parrot capable of withstanding low temperatures (as observed here, a New York winter).
I often feel bad for the Keas at our little zoo because it is nearly impossible to keep such a species adequately stimulated in captivity. This bird was very excited by my mere presence, simply because it was something new to look at. It was a little sad really, such a clever creature behind bars, most of the cage iced down so that the few toys available were largely frozen to the ground. It sometimes makes me wonder if caged birds are no so much singing as screaming...

Wow...that's heartbreaking. Aren't they a *very* rare species, or am I getting that mixed up with something else.

I would have like...made it some origami or something and stuffed it through the bars. Something for it to take apart, and learn how to make itself, heh.

I can see the keepers looking in there and finding tons of little origami animals made out of newspaper scraps and wondering where they keep coming from, the parrot laughing all the while...
